Professor and Mrs.Tufts and daughter Helen were charter members of the Meeting House Green Memorial and Historical Association (now the Hampton Historical Society), founded in Hampton NH in 1925. Professor Tufts was an occasional speaker at the annual meetings. It was interesting to put a face and some background to the name.
Thanks for the great Blog. I just very recently discovered that Peter Tufts (1538) was my 11th Great Grandfather. The last of my GGF's with Tufts surname was Edward Delmus Tufts and his daughter Susanna was my Great Grandmother. I have enjoyed very much reading about my ancestors in your blog and went to the Houston Public Library Genealogy collection today and looked at both volumes of the Tufts Kinsmen books that they have in their collect. I am Canadian (from Alberta) but have been living in Houston Tx for the last 33 years
Thanks Glen, I appreciate the feedback. I would be interested to know if they have an updated Tufts Kinsmen from 2010 and 2012. Please send me an e-mail if you have any stories to add to the collection. (like how a Canadian ends up in Texas.) My own Aunt Eleanor from NH lived in Dallas many years and I know of some Tufts descendents that lived near Houston recently, descendents of Freeling Tufts Colt the soldier in my D Day story.
I was wondering if you could help me with a death date. You have Henry M. Tufts, marries to Mary Heffler, death date as 1880. Ancestry.com has in Oct.10 1866 but the show no source for it. What is your source? I would like to get his death date correct. Thank you Megan Nieforth Pasco,Wa
I am going to comment here rather than putting the information in an email so that anyone else searching or interested can see my comment, too.
My maternal grandfather was Gordon Harrison Tufts Barnes. He was the son of Gordon Harrison Tufts' (as mentioned on your Tufts Soldiers to Remember post) sister. My understanding is that she named him after her beloved brother when he was killed in the war. I was searching your page for that branch of the family tree but wasn't finding it. I will see if a local library has the Tufts Kinsmen book so I can search further, but if you have any information, I would love to know more.
What you will find most interesting is that I am in possession of his Military Cross as well as a number of family photos, including him in his Military Uniform. They are in a frame right now, so it's hard to scan them, but as soon as I get some time in my hectic schedule, I will find a way to get them in some format I can share with you, if even a photo from my cell phone.
I will send you my email so we can keep in touch.
Thank you so much for all of your work and most importantly, for sharing it all publicly!!
I have some pictures of Professor Tufts taken 30 May 1932 and pictures of Kenneth, Eleanor and Charles who look like they are 5 or 6 years old. I also have a picture of Katherine & Charles Tufts taken 31 May 1931. They are in one of my Aunts photo albums her last name was Frances Grant so I am guessing that she is related to the Grants. If this is true I am only related by marriage but I would still like to build on the Grant part of my tree. Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated. My husband was born Kenneth A Traband in San Diego, CA in 1968. His birthmother's maiden name is Tufts. That's all we know. Any ideas? Thanks, Lisa Call
I have a bible dated 1813 that was printed in Boston. Mary Tufts signature and some other information was written down inside. Please email me if interested. mdsncbb@outlook.com
Hi Thomas. Great job on the Tufts family. My grandmother was Mildred Gay born in Tufts Cove and grand daughter of a Tufts. Her mother and brother (Ernest Gay - killed in the Halifax explosion) are buried in the Tufts Cove Cemetery. I did an interview of my mother Lillian Colter Blakeney who died in 1994 and who was in the Halifax Explosion. I have known since a child that we had Tufts ancestry and I have visited the Peter Tufts house in Medford. Interesting how Gershom's brothers were involved in building Ft. Cumberland, Nova Scotia. I love the stories. All the Best Ray Blakeney
Thomas Tufts is my 12 great grandfather. Peter Tufts is my 11great grandfather,James Tufts is my 10 great grandfather, Peter Tufts 1 is my9great grandfather,Peter Tufts2 is my 8great grandfather, Peter Tufts 3 is my 7great grandfather, he was Captain, this continues down thru my mothers side of the family thru her father. I am 84yrs.old and did not know about the Tufts linage until yesterday when FamilySearch posted I had new discovery.
Thanks for commenting. Please enjoy the :Tufts Ancestry" story in October 2012 (use the arrows next to the dates to navigate) and you can find the basic lineage. Send me an email at ttuftsy@comcast.net if you have any questions or have anything to add.
I was fulfilling some Find-A-Grave photo requests at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Boston, MA and came across the headstone for John (1828-1903) and Amelia (1830-1901) Tufts. Edward and Erena Wescott are on the reverse side. I'd be happy to send a photo along! I will create memorials for all of them.
I'd be happy to have them if you wish to share. Send them to ttuftsy@comcast.net please. You can also visit my facebook page Tufts Family Genealogy and share there for everyone to enjoy.
Hey, I wonder if in your research you have ever come across the Tupps. My Dad's uncle did a lot of digging on this a while back. My understanding is that somehow the name got changed for us sometime after Simon Tufts Moved to Kentucky?
I have not seen Tupps as a derivation of Tufts but am always willing to add relations. send me an email at ttuftsy@comcast.net and we can work on it. I do have some record of Kentucky Tufts, I think.
Another Tufts... Daniel Tufts San Diego CA descendants of the Tufts from Medford
